Brave Space 2.0: Promoting Race-conscious and Queer-friendly Classrooms
There are words and language which have historically been used to marginalize communities in our society that are still pervasive in our classrooms at Cal. These words only serve to create a hostile environment for every student on campus, and only work against Berkeley’s drive to create a more inclusive campus community.
In an effort to promote the ideals of race-conscious and gender-neutral language at Cal, Klein is creating an online awareness program for faculty, staff, and student organizations to be aware of what and how language has been used to alienate and exclude members of our campus. In addition, once a professor, for example, has completed the training, a seal will be shown next to their classroom on the online schedule of classes to signify that that professor makes a conscious effort to create an inclusive space for all students.
