Despite the silence surrounding suicide and depression, these issues are extremely prevalent on our campus. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for college students, averaging to about 1,100 students lost per year. Sometimes a large university can seem like a machine, and as students we are only a small cog or bolt in the overall structure. This often creates a sense of isolation to anyone struggling with mental health. As students, we are in a constant state of stress. There are many aspects to balance at the same time: school, professionalism, personal development, social pressures, and the list goes on. So, when a student begins to struggle with depression, asking for help seems as if they are admitting weakness or incompetence. On April 7th, 2013, You Mean More will be holding the second annual UC Berkeley Suicide Prevention Walk, benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Half of the proceeds from the walk will go to support suicide prevention programs for the Bay Area community and the other half will support suicide prevention nationally. One of the most important programs funded by our walk is the Interactive Screen Program, designed by AFSP, and implemented at the Tang Center right here at Cal. This anonymous screening program works with students in the dorms and is designed to identify at-risk individuals and encourage them to come in for treatment. This walk creates a statement by having members of the community join together to advocate for acceptance, love, and support. With this walk, we hope to reduce the stigma of suicide on campus and create a platform for such issues to be addressed and advocated for. We hope that you will support us in our journey to reduce stigma and increase support for mental health. More than that, we hope you believe in this cause and help initiate a crucial social movement on our campus, and campuses across the nation. Event Details Date: April 7th, 2013 Time: 11:00am-3:00pm Location: Upper Sproul Plaza, UC Berkeley There will be a resource fair with different organizations focused on mental health, several activities, and some amazing speakers and performers. Register here: tinyurl.com/ucbsuicidepreventionwalk2013 You can register as an individual walker, create a team, or join team. Once you register, you will automatically have your own fundraising page that you can personalize and send out to friends and family for donations.
Jobs for Good Causes- Info Session Thursday! Hello, As a graduating senior, you are no doubt trying to decide what you will do next year, or even for the next 5 years. Consider a job with CALPIRG. www.uspirg.org/jobs My parents met at Cal in 1968, and took part in many of the movements of the day, fighting for free speech and equal rights. When I got to college, I knew I wanted to make a difference like that, but I was frustrated that so many people were just talking about the problems of our generation, instead of actually doing something about them. I decided I had to work with an organization with a track record of results, so I joined CALPIRG. I started as an intern on campus, and now, in my third year on staff after graduating, I can look back on victories like helping 8,000 Cal students register to vote, banning plastic bags in Berkeley, and protecting California’s clean air and global warming laws by defeating Proposition 23. In addition to having a tangible impact on the issues I care about, I’ve made are some of my closest friends through my work, and I’ve learned tons of skills. If you’re like me, you look around and see too many problems in our country to sit back and do nothing. With CALPIRG, you can actually get paid to take on and solve the problems our country faces; from advocating for policies that will protect consumers from big bank and credit card rip-offs, to educating citizens and students about energy efficiency, and increasing participation in democracy. CALPIRG is part of a federation of state-based public interest advocacy groups called U.S. PIRG. And working together we have a much greater opportunity to make a difference. We have a 40-year track record of organizing on these issues, and, we’re hiring graduating seniors to jump right in and make a critical impact as a campus organizer or in our fellowship program. Learn more about both of these positions at www.uspirg.org/jobs. We will be holding an information session and interviews on campus Thursday, February 28th and Friday, March 1st. Info session: Thursday, February 28th in 80 Barrows Hall, 6-7 pm I encourage you to find out more and apply!
Hello Community! It is my pleasure to announce that the Ethnic Studies 5th Account is now active for the Spring semester of 2013! What is the 5th Account? The 5th account is a source of money made available for student groups on campus to seek assistance for programming and events that reflect the Ethnic Studies vision. The Ethnic Studies Department was created with the vision that people of color would overcome the discrimination they faced and rise above the socioeconomic, political, and historical barriers that have kept them oppressed since the beginning of this country’s history. The Ethnic Studies Department will only fund events that are all-inclusive of different ethnic communities. We believe in funding events that educate various communities about what the founders and students of Ethnic Studies believe in. Where can you apply? Applications are now available online via Cal Link. Hard copies have also been made available in Room 102 Hearst Gym. When/Where should you hand in your application? The first meeting of the semester will be February 27th 2013 at 3:00 in the Barbara Christian Conference room on the 5th floor of Barrows. Meetings are held biweekly. There will be a mailbox in room 102 Hearst Gym to hand in your application. You must hand in your application prior to a meeting in order to be considered on the agenda for the follow week. The Ethnic Studies 5th Account Chair will contact you through the information on your application with further instructions. **Please make sure to read the application thoroughly and fill out all necessary forms in order to be put on the agenda.
